Tony Robbins’s childhood

You might be wondering how did he become what he is today? Well, as you probably already know, childhood determines the quality of adult life. Not to say that only those children who were surrounded by loving family members have a chance to triumph, but just the opposite.

The grit young kids develop at the early stage is proven to be the deciding factor for a prosperous future. Tony was born as Anthony J. Mahorovic in North Hollywood California. His mother, Nikki Mahorovic was a notorious drug addict and an alcoholic who married several times after divorcing Tony’s father when he was only 7 years old. Tony went on to adopt one of his mom’s husbands’ last name Robbins at the age of 12. His real father John Mohorovic was a poor parking garage attendant who also actively participated in Tony’s chaotic and abusive upbringing.

He had no other option but to work to support his two siblings, who also suffered tremendously growing up in a dysfunctional family. On top of that, during that time in high school Robbins suddenly grew ten 10 inches taller, which a decade later, was diagnosed as the benign pituitary tumor in the brain. According to Robbins, the tumor disappeared on its own, and the hormonal residue kept on improving his unbeatable stamina to talk and travel ever so often.

The starting point

Tony wasn’t going to stay home and put up with the violence he grew up with. At the age of 17, he decided to leave the toxic environment his family imposed on him and set out on a search for a better life. Having no money in his pocket, he couldn’t even dream of attending college, which is why he ended up working as a janitor for miserable pay.

He was still supporting his family, both financially and mentally, as the oldest of three children. One day, while moving furniture at his second job, he asked a question that would change his life. He came up to one of his family’s acquaintances, whom his father always referred to as a “poor loser”, inquiring in a naive child voice how did he become so successful in the end? That is when he got introduced to one of America’s best-loved entrepreneurs and motivational speakers, Jim Rohn.

Although his landlord could send Tony to the seminar for free, he rejected his pleads and made him work harder to save and value the money he was going to spend. Tony was earning 40$ a week at the time, which was the approximate ticket price for a one-day event.

Rohn’s mantra was “true happiness is not contained in what you get, happiness is gained by what you become.” He was simply a continuation of the motivational self-improvement series that took place after the Great Depression, followed by Napoleon Hill and his Think and Grow Rich and Dale Carnegie with his iconic How to Win Friends & Influence People. After an arduous and stressful divorce procedure, it was decided that Pete’s father would have custody over him.

Throughout elementary Pete was subjected to horrible physical and verbal abuse by his father. Pete was severely impacted by these experiences, recalling that he often had to hide to avoid a beating whenever the Dallas Cowboys, which was his father’s favorite team, lost a match. Eventually, his grandmother realized that enough was enough and took him home to stay with her instead.

It wouldn’t be until Pete started high school that his father would come back into his life. His father, being propelled by other families members, tried everything to make amends. Pete recalls trying everything from going to church together to attending multiple emotional counseling sessions with his father. However, nothing seemed to work. Seemingly fed up, Pete continued onto college at Midwestern State University.

While at college, Pete Vargas was inspired by Jerry Maguire and sought to be a sports agent. It was here that Pete first began being interested in making a positive impact through powerful mediums, such as sports. Pete wanted to represent stars such as basketball player David Robinson, believing that if he could represent influential sports players, he would be playing his part in spreading positivity throughout the world.

Pete’s desire to spread a positive and impactful message led him to forgo a lucrative job offer in the corporate sector in Dallas. Instead, he took up a job as a youth pastor in rural Texas. His role as a youth pastor only earned him $18,000 a year, however, he was given sole control over the youth group of the church. The youth group at the time only consisted of three members. From Tragedy to Triumph: How Pete’s Life Changed Forever

One day, Pete worked with Darrell Scott, whose daughter was tragically murdered in the Columbine School Massacre. Darrell was able to captivate the youth group and urged the group to express their affection to the five most important people in their lives. Hearing this, Pete made a life-changing decision to contact his father. Pete invited his father to an event held that night where parents and their children at the church would listen to a speaker talk about the importance of family unity.

Pete’s father attended this event, and towards the end, almost all of the parents and their children in attendance were hugging and expressing their gratitude towards one another. Pete’s father didn’t utter a word the entire time. Understandably, Pete was devastated.

However, just two weeks after the event finished, Pete received a letter from his father. The long letter was a heartfelt apology from his dad which proclaimed that he wanted forgiveness. The letter ended with words Pete had never heard from his father, “I love you.”

This life-changing event allowed all of Pete’s efforts up to that point to come full circle. He immediately contacted the speaker of that fateful night that had inspired his father to write the letter. He wanted to help the speaker spread his message so that the same thing could happen to others in similar situations as himself. The speaker told Pete that he was trying many marketing tactics, but none seemed to be sticking. In reply, Pete simply said, “well, stages work.”
